The Vanuatu Airports Authority has announced a tender for the redevelopment of retail and passenger service facilities at Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila. Announced in the second week of October 2025, the tender invites proposals from local and international operators for the redevelopment and management of commercial and passenger service spaces at Bauerfield International Airport.
The redevelopment is aimed at improving the traveller experience and increasing commercial revenue opportunities within the terminal.
Bauerfield Airport is the primary international gateway to Vanuatu. Although recent runway upgrades have ensured operational safety, passenger facilities and retail spaces have been identified as needing modernisation. The new tender seeks private sector proposals to design, fit-out and operate commercial spaces including food outlets, retail stores, visitor services and lounge facilities.
The redevelopment aims to attract both international brands and local enterprises. There is strong interest in showcasing Vanuatu made products and cultural items to travellers as part of strengthening the tourism economy.
The proposed upgrades also include improved seating areas, enhanced accessibility, and digital traveller information systems. The Airports Authority has highlighted customer comfort and efficient passenger flow as key objectives.
Industry representatives view the redevelopment as timely, particularly as tourism recovery continues. Airlines have indicated that improved airport services can influence visitor perception and encourage longer stays.
The tender process is open to local and international firms, with submissions expected to include financial models, design concepts and partnership structures. The Airports Authority will evaluate proposals based on commercial viability, operational capability and alignment with Vanuatu’s tourism branding.
Construction timelines will depend on the selected proposal, but staged implementation is expected to avoid major disruption to airport operations.
