Solomon Islands’ Malaita Province has officially inaugurated three newly constructed bridges along the Auki-Dala road. Built by Australian firm Reeves Envico, these bridges – Koa, Bi’o 1, and Bi’o 2 – replace aging wooden structures with robust steel designs, ensuring durability against natural disasters. The project, completed in September 2024 at a cost of USD 9.6 million, was funded by the World Bank under the Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP).
Reeves Envico is a proud member of the Australia Pacific Islands Business Council (APIBC). Managing Director Simon Gorman is President APIBC.
The handover ceremony saw attendance from key figures, including Malaita Deputy Premier Randall Sifoni, Deputy Secretary Corporate of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) Andrew Houlia, members of the Malaita Executive team, and leaders from the Bi’o community. Reeves Envico was represented by Geoff Lewin, underscoring the company’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in the region.
Deputy Premier Sifoni emphasized the transformative impact of the new bridges on local communities, stating, “Improved road networks are vital for facilitating transport, trade, and economic activity, especially in agriculture, fisheries, and tourism sectors.” He also urged residents to take pride in and maintain these significant public assets.
World Bank Representative Naoki Kakuta highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project, noting, “The successful completion of these bridges reflects our shared goal of a stronger, safer, and more connected Solomon Islands.” The World Bank’s investment aims to enhance connectivity, thereby stimulating economic growth and improving access to essential services for Malaita’s populace.
Reeves Envico’s involvement in this project aligns with its broader mission to deliver sustainable infrastructure solutions across the Pacific. The company’s approach emphasizes cultural sensitivity and local engagement, ensuring that projects meet the unique needs of the communities they serve.
The inauguration of these bridges marks a pivotal step in Malaita’s development journey, promising enhanced mobility, economic opportunities, and resilience against environmental challenges. As the province looks ahead, such infrastructure investments are poised to lay the foundation for sustained growth and improved quality of life for its residents.
